His recent works are shown on billboards in the main street of every city in India, advertising Orange, Star Movies, Toshiba, etc… In 2009, he was the exclusive photographer on Dell’s worldwide campaign and visited Tokyo.

シルワサ: Shilvasa (スレシュ・ナタラジャン: Suresh Natarajan） は，インド西海岸の一大中心都市ムンバイ(旧ボンベイ)にスタジオを構えるインド人カメラマンで，広告写真，ファッション，ドキュメンタリー，映画制作指揮，カリグラフィ(書道)，絵画その他の分野にわたって，20年以上のキャリアを誇っている．21世紀に入ってからこの十年の活躍は特に目覚しく，もはやシルワサの名前，作品を知らない人は，ムンバイの映画マスコミ業界にはいないのではないかと思われる．

2000年3月に，インドを拠点とする国際的なチベット支援団体 friendsoftibet.org が，ムンバイの中心街の主な公共施設を1週間以上借り切り主催した一大キャンペーン，「フェスティバル・オブ・チベット2000」の際には，その専属カメラマンとしてダライ・ラマに随伴し，ダラムサラ邸にてくつろぐダライ・ラマの日常生活を詩的に記録写真化してみせた．公的な激務の狭間にダライ・ラマその人自身がかもしだす不思議なほどゆったりした時間の流れをとらえたその連続写真は，当時，インド最大の博物館の一つ旧プリンス・オブ・ウェールズ博物館（Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya)にて，カメラマンであるシルワサ自身のメッセージと共に展示され，二人の間に交わされた芸術的なやりとりが人々の注目を集めた．以下のリンクから，あなたもそれをファインダー越しに味わってみてほしい．

彼のごく最近の作品・作風は，いまやインド国内のありとあらゆる都市の目抜き通りに林立し，中空を埋めるビルボードの群れの中に目の当たりにすることが出来る．それは携帯電話大手オレンジのものであったり，衛星TVスタームービー，日本企業の東芝に依頼されたものまで色々であるけれど，色彩の鮮やかさと，禅画に通じるような空白をうまく使ったレイアウトが無性に心に残る．

2009年には、世界最大のコンピュータ・メーカーDELLの国際キャンペーンの依頼を受け，その専属カメラマンとして，世界中を飛び回った．下の写真はその途中，彼が東京に寄った際，数年ぶりに再会した私の娘の成長を喜び，写真に収めてくれているところである．(文責：瀬戸)

Kiku Hawkes Biography

Vancouver-based artist and photographer Kiku Hawkes was born in Germany and raised in New England, emigrating to Canada in the mid-70’s.

During her years at Friends World College, an experimental university founded on Quaker principles, she traveled extensively, studying in Nepal, India, Japan and Mexico.

Hawkes attended the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, entering with advanced standing, and majoring in Photography. Since graduating she has created a diverse body of work in alternate process and photo-based media.

Hawkes has also participated in a broad range of photographic and related creative endeavours, including instruction of creative practices in diverse venues ranging from traditional arts institutes to parallel galleries to women’s prisons; and the production of numerous educational media productions for labour and professional associations. She has also curated several exhibitions, including a 2-month long, city-wide series of site-specific installations in collaboration with the international project “World Artists For Tibet.” Between 2008 and 2009 Hawkes worked on the digital assemblage and restoration of the 15 ft. X 53 inch, North Wall mural of the Norbu Lu Khang temple in Lhasa, Tibet. Prior to the invasion of Tibet by China, this 1000 year-old meditation chamber was exclusively used by the Dalai Lamas and their teachers.

Hawkes’ artworks have been exhibited across Canada, and collected by both private and public institutions. She has also received national and international awards for her work in commercial photography. Support has come from many sources over the years, including parents, friends, community and government agencies.

キク・ホークス (Kiku Hawkes) は、バンクーバーを活動拠点とする画家，写真家です．ドイツで生まれ，ニュー・イングランドで育ち，70年代中頃にカナダに移住しました．キリスト友会（クエーカー）の教義に基づく実験教育で有名な大学フレンド・ワールド・カレッジ (Friends World College) 在学中，ネパール，インド，日本，メキシコ等の世界各地でフィールド・ワークを重ね，その後，エミリー・カー美術大学 （Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design） に通い直し，そこで単位の振替を認められた上，写真学を専攻しました．

卒業してからは，汎用的な銀塩現像処理を見直し，古典印画技法と現像後処理の組み合わせにより，古くて新しい表現媒体の可能性を探求し，その後の彼女の作品に特徴的な，個性的表現手法の礎を完成させて行きました．

ホークスは、個人的な探求だけに留まらず，広範囲にわたる写真関連の創造的営み，社会的な試みにも積極的に参加してきました．例えば，伝統芸術機関への協力を始めとして，一般には知られることのない女性刑務所内における制作発表の環境構築まで，あるいはまた，労働者，専門事業者協会のための教育用メディア制作にもかなりの数関わっており，生涯にわたって多種多様な創造の現場での実践指導を重ねてきたのです．

彼女は、また、いくつかの展覧会を運営した経験もあります．これには，国際プロジェクト『チベットのための世界のアーティスト展』(World Artist For Tibet)との共同企画として，2ヵ月にわたって街全体にわたって繰り広げられたサイトスペシフィック・インスタレーション(設置場所自体を題材にとりこむ空間美術)などが挙げられます．

2008年から2009年にかけては，チベットはラサのノルブ・ル・カン寺院(Norbu Lu Khang, Lhasa)の，15フィートx53インチの北壁壁画の電子技術による再現，つぎはぎ修復に取り組みました．歴代ダライ・ラマとその師僧たちだけが使うことを許されたこの瞑想堂は，中国によるチベット侵略の前夜まで、1000年の歳月にわたって維持保存されてきたはずのものでした．

ホークス制作の美術作品はカナダ国内全土にわたって広く展示されており，個人及び公共機関によって数多く所蔵されてきました．彼女は、また、商業写真の制作分野においても国家的および国際的な賞をいくつも受賞しています．家族や友人，地域共同体，そして政府機関からも多大な支援と支持を受けながら，公私にわたって芸術的活動を繰り広げています．(訳責：瀬戸)

Birth of the Empty Chrysanthemum
空菊花誕生

The “Birth of the Empty Chrysanthemum”  depicts an event in space where the five Dhyani Buddhas, envisioned as colored norbu, emerge from a fractal vagina, slip through a warpped passageway where they flower as void chrysanthemums. In this instance, the empty chrysanthemum is an enlightened Japan, perhaps the best therapy after the horrors. I seem to be stuck in LEO, low earth orbit, and now imagine all sort of things happening just above us in space. You have to admit, the view is spectacular up there.

Plus, the emptiness itself is unique, vast beyond measure and forms the substrate of consciousness. At any given moment, somewhere in completely empty regions of space, a hydrogen atom just pops into existence. Just like that, just as if it popped into your imagination. One moment there is absolutely nothing and the next moment there is a complete hydrogen atom. You can listen to these atoms in space at 21cm, or 1420.40575177MHz. Every time a hydrogen atom reverses its polarity and flips , it emits a radio burst at that frequency. The sound is analogous to the whale songs that saturate the oceans on earth.

Birth of the Empty Chrysanthemum
空菊花誕生 (空性の菊の花の誕生)

それは虚空(宇宙)で起きた出来事．
自らを入れ子にして無限に入り組んだフラクタルの女陰から，
世界の素となるの五つの果実(五智如来)が色づき，零れ落ちる．

五色の果実は，
無限と有限を結ぶ暗き産道を飛び出した直後から，
いずれ朽ち果て滅び去るべき運命にある．
とはいえ，枯れても枯れても互いに自らを他の肥やしとしながら，
この世のある限り，「命」という空性の菊を繰り返し咲かせ続ける．

空性の菊の花とは，どんなに悲しみに満ちていようと，慈しみの心を忘れない日本人の姿を象徴しています．
願わくば，この絵が，このたび災害に遭われた人々の悲しみと孤独をいくらかでも癒せるものとなりますように．

いずれこの地球を立ち去らねばならないのなら，せめて私は大気圏すれすれの低軌道 (LEO: low earth orbit) から，飽きるまで大地を海を見下ろしていたい．同時に，地球上の全ての同胞たちの頭上にあって，手がかりも足がかりも無いまま拡がる宇宙の真っ只中に，喜びも悲しみも含め全ての出来事の発端と終焉があること．そのことをみんなに知らせたい．私たちはそれを受け入れるほか無い．その眺めはきっと悲しみを超えて素晴らしいものだろう．

私にとっての「空」は，そうした宇宙の測り知れない存在のあり方を指し示す「仮称」のようなものです．ひたすら生き延びようとすることこそが人間の生理的本能的な目的なのだとしたら，その思惑を超えた巨視的レベル，微視的レベルで，今この瞬間にも現れては消えていく宇宙の不思議さ，はかなさがあります．全ての人がそれを新しい世界観として共有することができたなら，人間は一人一人の命のもろさを超えて，生きとし生けるものすべてのためにいずれ何かしらを見つけ，育てていくことができると信じている．

私たちに与えられた短い時間の中でさえ，今この瞬間にも，宇宙のどこかしらで，完全な虚無の中から，無数の星が実存を抱いて飛び出してくる．まさに，ただかくの如く来たれり！誰かがそう在れと強く願うなら，この広い宇宙のどこかしらには既に人が思いつく限りの物は実在し，なぞを解く鍵はそこいら中に転がっているのかもしれない．一瞬前までは，ただひたすらの虚無だった宇宙に，次の瞬間、完璧な一個の水素原子が自らをひねり出し，生まれてくる事実があるように．

およそ星々の集まるところに，遠くにも近くにも宇宙のそこかしこに存在する水素原子．波長 21.106114 cm ＝ 周波数 1420.40575177 MHz を捉えれば，水素原子の発する騒々しい音が宇宙をにぎわしているのを実際に聞くことが出来る．これは一個の水素原子において，陽子の周りを公転する電子の自転極性が陽子そのものと同方向の場合と，逆の場合とで，保持できるエネルギー量に差があることによるもので，ごくまれにこの逆転現象が起きる時，外に向かって放出されるエネルギーが，この周波数の電磁波となって届くのだという．それは確率の上では在り得ないほど滅多にしか起こらないはずのことなのに，宇宙があまりにも大きく膨大な量の水素を抱えているために，この音が鳴り止むことは無く，その音は、地球の海を満たすクジラの歌声ともどことなく似ている．

日本への千羽鶴
地球へと舞い降りようとする鶴の群れが，体を傾けて旋回を始める．その様子を強調する目的で，フラクタル効果の渦巻き曲線を重ねてみた．

地球の地平を表すカーブも，宇宙に浮かんだ「惑星」らしく見えるように，少し大げさに丸くしてある．地上に縛られたままの現世的，人間的観点からすれば，地球という「惑星」がこんな風に見えてほしい，と期待されるようにね．この高度から見下ろした場合，たとえ科学的に見て，どこまでも水平に近い地平線こそが正しいとしてもだ．

当初，日本に千羽鶴の風習があることを聞いた時，自分としては，白い鶴だけで画面を埋めたほうが渋くて格好いいかなと思ったんだ．なぜなら地震でたくさんの人が亡くなった事を思うと，白こそが鎮魂に相応しいと思ったからなんだ．でも，残された人々を応援するために色を付けたほうが善いと，もう一度思い直し，出来上がっていたムーブメントを壊さない程度の中間色で塗ってみた．鶴が螺旋を描いて降下していく感じを壊さずに表現できているかな？

日本のフォントを使って，”One thousand cranes for Japan from MaBian” と書いたつもり．それと西暦の2011年と書く代わりに，日本の天皇の年号「平成23年」を書き添えた．最初にみんなでポスターを作る時に必ずこれは入れよう，そう決めたようにね．これで通じるかな？

Exaggerated the curve of the earth a little rounder. So it reads more like “planet” as might be expected from an earthly point of view. Even though the vast flat horizon may be scientifically accurate at the altitude.

In early plan, I had thought the white cranes might be better because it’s stark, plain. Moreover I was considering the number of people who died, white may be the best color for their requiem. But I finally painted them up with pastel colors for cheering up people. Didn’t I brake the movement of spiraling down with them?

With the Japanese fonts, I want to say: “One thousand cranes for Japan from MaBian.” And I inserted the Emperor’s dateA: “HeiSei 23” from the original poster, instead of 2011. Make sense?
